The Last Cookie

documenting remaining family recipes of italian grandmothers

Food is the carrier of culture, and favourite family recipes are the tangible connections to previous generations. I began this personal project documenting first-generation Italian grandmothers and their best cookie recipes because I noticed the newer generations no longer showcased the home made treats at milestone celebrations, and instead preferred custom-made cookies from commercial bakeries. Even though the grandchildren showcased their pride for their heritage, they didn’t participate in the custom of family members baking cookies for celebrations such as weddings and baby showers. These wonderful recipes were at risk of being lost as the first generation was the one who held the knowledge.
